No. PMDD has existed long before Prozac was approved by the FDA for the treatment of PMDD. Previously known as Late Luteal Phase Dysphoric Disorder (and often minimized as “severe-PMS” or “hysteria” in more archaic times), PMDD is a serious medical diagnosis that causes distress and life interference, and therefore requires treatment. Both intermittent (luteal phase only) and continuous treatment with Prozac (fluoxetine) and other SSRIs been carefully tested against placebo for the treatment of PMDD in many randomized controlled trials, and have been found to be effective for about 60% of those with PMDD.
